Rand Paul ad jabs Hillary Clinton as 'worst' of D.C. machine
GOP Sen. Rand Paul wasted no time making Hillary Clinton a target of his presidential campaign, releasing his first TV ad Sunday ahead of her announcement.
The ad seeks to portray the leading Democratic contender as a tool of the "Washington machine." The Kentucky senator, who officially jumped into the 2016 race last week, is portraying himself as a new kind of Republican and has made defeating the Washington machine a campaign theme.
"Hillary Clinton represents the worst of the Washington machine," the narrator says in the minute-long spot. "The arrogance of power, corruption and cover-up, conflicts of interest and failed leadership with tragic consequences."
The ad features images of Clinton, along with abandoned homes and protests in the Middle East to reflect her connection to Obama administration policies that Paul has long criticized. The spot includes footage from Paul's campaign announcement in Louisville, where he proclaimed, "I have a message ... a message that is loud and clear and does not mince words. We have come to take our country back."
The Paul ad launches Monday on cable in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada. Paul traveled to all four early presidential nominating states after his campaign kickoff last week.
Paul also set up a "liberty not Hillary" Web page. He's also selling anti-Clinton items in his online store using the theme, including a T-shirt, bumper sticker and whimsical hard drive and eye chart. If you buy, the money, of course, goes to support his campaign.
