Former Treasury chief Paulson backing Jeb Bush in 2016
The Wall Street wing of the Republican Party continues to line up behind Jeb Bush in the 2016 Republican contest.
Former Treasury secretary Hank Paulson said in an interview with Paste BN that he already has written checks for Bush, though the former Florida governor hasn’t formally announced his candidacy yet. That’s not much of a surprise, given that Paulson served as the top economic policy maker in the administration of Bush’s brother, George W. Bush.
“I’m supporting Jeb because I think he’s a very successful governor,” said Paulson, a former CEO of Goldman Sachs. “I believe he will have some of the answers we need to get this economy growing, growing faster in which it spreads the benefits more broadly. And I see him not as a polarizing figure, but one who’s inclusive.”
Paulson said he’d like to see more bipartisan efforts to address the nation’s economic challenges, including lowering the national debt and reducing income inequality. “Political campaigns aren’t the time for that,” he said. “I wish they were, but regrettably they’re not.”
But after the election, “I think the American people are ultimately going to demand we have some fundamental changes, and that will lead to the kinds of compromises I’d like to see happen.”
