Poll: Rubio gets a bounce, challenges Bush as GOP's future

The numbers are in: Marco Rubio got a bounce from his presidential announcement.

A new CNN/ORC International poll released last night has two takeaways that are good news for the Florida senator, who officially jumped into the 2016 race on April 13.

Rubio now has 11% support among Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP -- up from 7% in the CNN/ORC poll taken in March. That still puts Rubio behind Jeb Bush (17%) and Scott Walker (12%) and tied with Rand Paul as the only Republicans in the field with double-digit support.

But on the question of who represents the future of the Republican Party, Rubio appears to be giving Bush a run for his money. Eighteen percent of Republicans and GOP leaners say both Bush, a former Florida governor, and Rubio are the GOP's future. Walker, for example, has indirectly criticized Bush by saying the GOP needs a fresh face as the 2016 standard bearer.

Rubio framed the presidential election as a "generational choice" with his speech last week at Miami's Freedom Tower. His launch came just a day after Hillary Clinton officially jumped in, and he made sure to reference her as a candidate representing "yesterday."

The CNN/ORC poll of 435 Republicans and independent leaners was taken April 16-19 and has an error margin of +/- 4.5 percentage points.
