Trump struggles on foreign policy test
Depending on your point of view, Donald Trump either failed a foreign policy quiz or succumbed to a series of "gotcha" questions during a Thursday radio interview.
Speaking with radio host Hugh Hewitt, the businessman-turned-Republican-front-runner could not identify the leaders of several Middle East militant groups, including the Quds Forces in Iran, Hezbollah, al Qaeda, and the Islamic State.
At another point, Trump appeared to confuse the Quds Forces with the non-militant Kurds of Iraq, though Trump said he mis-heard Hewitt's question.
In accusing Hewitt of "gotcha" questioning, Trump said at one point that "you’re asking me names that, I think it’s somewhat ridiculous, but that’s okay."
At another point, Trump said he will learn more about the differences between Hezbollah and Hamas "when it’s appropriate. I will know more about it than you know, and, believe me, it won’t take me long."
Hewitt, who will be a questioner at the next Republican debate on Sept. 16, said prospective presidents need to know the names of key players in the Middle East.
"At the debate, I may bring up Nasrallah being with Hezbollah, and al-Julani being with al-Nusra, and al-Masri being with Hamas," Hewitt told Trump. "Do you think if I ask people to talk about those three things, and the differences, that that’s a gotcha question?"
Replied Trump: "Yes, I do. I totally do. I think it’s ridiculous."
