Who's next? Possible Boehner successors as speaker

House Speaker John Boehner's surprise announcement that he would resign his House seat, and the speakership, at the end of October sent shock waves through Capitol Hill and sparked immediate talk about who his successor will be. Here's a quick look at some possible candidates:

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

McCarthy is the presumed favorite. At his news conference explaining his decision Friday, Boehner said it would be up to the House to choose its next speaker, but that McCarthy make an "excellent" one. McCarthy became majority leader following Eric Cantor's surprise primary loss in 2014.

Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas

Hensarling chairs the House Financial Services Committee and previously was chairman of the House Republican Conference.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash.

McMorris Rodgers is the Republican Conference chair, the 4th-ranking post in the House GOP leadership.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La.

Scalise became House majority whip after McCarthy's ascension to majority leader.

Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho

A possible long-shot candidate, Labrador is a Tea Party conservative who challenged McCarthy for the majority leader's job last year.
