Ann Romney seeks 'better angels' in presidential race

Ann Romney says this has been "one of the most fascinating campaign seasons" in memory, but she's also hoping things turn a little more serious soon.

"It's entertaining -- at the same time, it's troubling," Romney said during an interview on SiriusXM's Leading Ladies series on the POTUS satellite radio channel.

While not naming names -- she declined a specific invitation to talk about Donald Trump -- the wife of 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney also decried the tone of the campaign, which has included harsh criticism of other candidates, and even of women and minorities.

"I think we've all been entertained by some of the candidates," Romney said, but she added that, "I'm hoping that the better angels will take hold."

Romney spoke with SiriusXM POTUS host Julie Mason as part of a tour to promote In This Together: My Story, her memoir of life with multiple sclerosis.

In taking questions about politics, Romney did say that some of the outsider candidates in the race, including Democratic aspirant Bernie Sanders, are reflecting Americans' frustrations with government.

People feel that Washington, D.C., is "broken," that special interests are getting their way,  and that the economic recovery has not included them, she said.

"There's a sentiment in the country right now where people are enormously frustrated, and feeling left out of the system," Romney said. "And it's real."

Romney, who has not made an endorsement, also had praise for the presidential candidates, nearly all of whom she has met.

"They're quite interesting characters," she said. "All of them."

She added: "You can imagine that Mitt and I are watching with great interest."

Romney also talks about her husband's decision not to run in 2016 and how she almost appeared on Dancing With The Stars.

The full interview airs at 3 p.m. ET Friday on The Press Pool with Julie Mason at SiriusXM's POTUS channel 124. It will replay at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday, and throughout the weekend.
