CBS poll: Trump and Carson both top 20%

The outsiders are still dominating the Republican presidential race, according to a new CBS News poll.

Donald Trump still leads in the new national poll with 27%, followed by Ben Carson at 21%, CBS News reports.

No other GOP candidate finished in double digits. Ted Cruz is third in the CBS poll at 9%, followed by Marco Rubio (8%), Jeb Bush (6%), and Carly Fiorina (6%). No other Republican candidate finished with more than 5%.

In separate interviews on CBS' Face The Nation, Trump and Carson -- both of whom have criticized the political establishment -- said voters are responding to their messages. They also disputed criticisms of their campaigns.

According to the CBS poll, voters give Trump high marks for leadership,  but 60% of registered  voters say he is not honest and trustworthy.

"I win hands down on leadership, right?" Trump said. "That's very important to people now.  They want leadership.  They're tired of having weak and incompetent leaders."

The poll gives Carson high marks for honesty and trustworthiness -- the highest in the Republican field -- but some voters have criticized his comments about gun control and the threat of government tyranny.

In a new book, Carson writes that “the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if people had been armed.”

Asked on Face The Nation if that is a concern with the United States, Carson said: "I didn’t say that it was going on right now. I think the implication is quite clear that it is something that can happen, and I listed a number of countries where that kind of thing happened."
