Book: Trump sought to be H.W. Bush's veep
A new biography of President George H.W. Bush has an interesting tidbit about a 2016 presidential candidate -- not Jeb Bush, but Donald Trump.
Jon Meacham's Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush, to be published Tuesday, reports that Trump wanted to be the elder Bush's running mate when he was nominated for president in 1988.
The book says Trump let Bush campaign adviser Lee Atwater know he was available for the post.
In a Sunday interview on CNN, Trump said Atwater asked him about the running mate post, and claimed that the Bush adviser told him he would "be great" in the job.
"I said, 'I don't know, Lee,'" Trump said on CNN's State of the Union. "'Check it out. Take a look at it. And if it works, I guess I would certainly consider it.'
"But it never went much further than that."
