Pence defends Trump's attack style
CLEVELAND — Donald Trump's new running mate, Mike Pence, has written critical things about negative campaigning, but he now says the current Republican campaign is about issues, not style.
"In the essay that I wrote a long time ago, I said campaigns ought to be about something more important than just one candidate's election," Pence said in a joint interview with Trump on CBS' 60 Minutes. "And this campaign, and Donald Trump's candidacy, has been about the issues the American people care about."
Running with a candidate who has attacked "Lyin' Ted Cruz" and "Crooked Hillary Clinton," Pence said that voters "see America in decline at home and abroad" and "a Congress that's unable to balance its budgets or deal with and end illegal immigration."
Pence described Trump as "a good man who's been talking about the issues the American people care about."
For his part, Trump said he and Pence are "different people" and that he will to be more aggressive on the campaign trail.
"I call her 'Crooked Hillary' — she's crooked Hillary," Trump told CBS. "I didn't ask him to do it, but I don't think he should do it because it's different for him."
