Kaine weighs in on Trump's 'extreme vetting' proposal

Donald Trump’s call for “extreme vetting” of immigrants to make sure they have American values may be a “prettier” package, but it’s still the same Trump policy underneath, according to Tim Kaine.

The Democratic vice presidential nominee was speaking to NBC's Today show in an interview that aired Wednesday when he was asked about Trump’s calls for a heightened screening program for immigrants.

“He might be trying to package it and make it prettier, but this is a guy who has proposed to treat Muslims as second-class citizens,” Kaine said. “We do not need to go down a path where we treat people differently because of their religious beliefs.”

Kaine also addressed the controversies regarding his running mate’s use of a private email server when she was secretary of state. Earlier this summer the FBI said that Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server was not criminal but was "extremely careless."

On Tuesday, the FBI released documents to Republican congressional leaders with details about their investigation into Clinton’s email server. The Clinton campaign has called for the report to be made public.

“Anything that the FBI gives to Congress they should get to the public,” Kaine said. “What we’ve seen is this likely multimillion-dollar congressional investigation that has been highly partisan where they’ve wanted to leak out this or that to try and make their case against Hillary Clinton. Let the public see what the FBI decides to let Congress see.”
