'TIME' revives August 'Meltdown' cover for Trump amid latest controversies
Remember in August when Donald Trump was facing shrinking poll numbers and unprecedented criticism from members of his own party for the way he treated a Gold Star family? Well, TIME magazine thinks this last week has been even worse — much worse.
A few weeks after the conventions, TIME magazine came out with a provocative cover that featured a melting image of Trump with text on the side said “Meltdown.” On Thursday, one day after a group of women came forward and accused the Republican nominee of sexual misconduct and less than a week after a video came out with him describing how he was able to grope women because of his star power, TIME has revived the cover, with a wrinkle.
The October cover looks almost the same as the August version, except that Trump’s face is even more squished and the text reads “Total Meltdown.”
TIME described the decision to post a revamped version:
“The Oct. 24 issue of TIME may look a little familiar to some readers. In order to capture the latest twists in Donald Trump’s campaign and the rising anger within the Republican party leadership about their standard bearer’s behavior, we asked artist Edel Rodriguez to reprise his illustration of Donald Trump which appeared on the Aug. 22 issue of TIME—this time with just one small twist.”
“We want to focus attention on the last week,” Radhika Jones, TIME's deputy managing editor, told MSNBC Thursday morning. “The Trump campaign has also effectively declared war on the GOP.”
The October cover story focuses on the Republican Party’s identify crisis following the release of the video, as an increasing number of GOP officials have announced they would no longer back their party's nominee.
The Economist also had a provocative cover in which they placed Trump's face on the rear of the Republican elephant.
