Vladimir Putin went old school when he sent President-elect Donald Trump a word of congratulations on Wednesday.

The Russian president sent Trump a telegram giving him props on winning his upset victory over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, the Associated Press reported.

The Kremlin said in a statement that Putin expressed "his hope to work together for removing Russian-American relations from their crisis state," the AP reported.

Putin said he was confident that "equality, mutual respect and a real accounting (of) each other's positions" would lead to constructive dialogue between Moscow and Washington.

Political figures from around the world congratulated Trump.

Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte wished Trump success as the U.S. president and “looks forward to working with the incoming administration for enhanced Philippines-US relations anchored on mutual respect, mutual benefit and shared commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law," communications secretary Martin Andanar said in a statement.

Miro Cerar, prime minister of Slovenia, also congratulated Trump.

Viktor Orban, prime minister of Hungary, called Trump’s victory is “great news” and said it shows “democracy is still alive.”
