Trump team downplays reports about security clearances for children

Donald Trump's team is downplaying reports that the president-elect inquired about getting national security clearances for his children.

"That's not something I'm expecting right now," said a Trump transition official speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the story.

CBS News reported that Trump "is potentially seeking top secret security clearances for his children," and "has asked the White House to explore the possibility of getting his children the top secret security clearances."

Donald Trump. Jr., and siblings Eric and Ivanka, as well as son-in-law Jared Kushner, are expected to be advisers during their father's presidency.

They would have to fill out security paperwork and undergo background checks, but that process has not yet started, Trump transition officials said.

Officials also said the issue was raised informally.

Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told Fox News: "It sounds to me that was an envelope question posed by someone. It doesn't sound like it was a formal request."
