Donald Trump is halfway home on his Cabinet picks

Donald Trump is halfway home when it comes to Cabinet picks.

Having selected nominees for 10 Cabinet jobs subject to Senate confirmation — including Defense secretary-designate James Mattis, whom Trump will formally announce on Tuesday — the president-elect now has 10 slots remaining.

The most prominent: secretary of State.

Two other national security jobs also remain: the director of national intelligence and the secretary of Homeland Security. So does another military-related job: the secretary of Veterans Affairs.

A major economic post also remains to be filled: U.S. trade representative, a key opening given Trump's vow to change major free-trade agreements.

Trump must also fill the job of Labor secretary. The other unfilled Cabinet jobs are domestic in nature: Interior, Agriculture, Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The jobs Trump has filled: Defense (Mattis), Treasury (Steve Mnuchin), Transportation (Elaine Chao), Health and Human Services (Tom Price), Commerce (Wilbur Ross), Education (Betsy DeVos), United Nations ambassador (Nikki Haley), Housing and Urban Development (Ben Carson), Central Intelligence Agency (Mike Pompeo) and attorney general (Jeff Sessions).
