Chris Christie gets a 'beachgate' sand sculpture
Just when Chris Christie thought #beachgate had washed up, his sandy likeness was back on the shore.
A sandcastle version of the New Jersey governor lounging in a beach chair was built Tuesday on Seaside Heights beach. Christie was criticized over the weekend when photos were taken of him enjoying the seaside with his family after he had allowed for a state government shutdown and called for the closing of all state beaches and parks.
According to NBC News and the Associated Press, lifeguards said Christie was molded by sculptors “Larry and Tom,” who come to the beach annually and build a sand sculpture. Their castle last year honored the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Twitter didn't miss the opportunity to roast Christie, who already has a 17% approval rating – the lowest approval rating for any New Jersey governor ever.
Christie, however, was not bothered by the backlash.
"I think I have proven over the past eight years, that I don't care about political optics," Christie said Monday.
When initially confronted by reporters, Christie skirted questions about whether he enjoyed his private beach, stating, “I didn’t get any sun today.” His spokesman clarified this was because “he had a baseball hat on.”
