Network Journalists and Editors win big at National Press Foundation and EPPY Awards
Throughout the past few weeks, Paste BN NETWORK journalists were granted prestigious awards honoring their high achievements.
Nicole Carroll, VP of News and Editor of the Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, was awarded the National Press Foundation’s prestigious Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year Award. Established in 1984 with the purpose of acknowledging those who “enhance the quality of journalism in the U.S.,” the award recognizes editors with “imagination, professional skill, ethics, and an ability to motivate staff—qualities that produce excellence in media and represent the highest standards of journalism.”
A member of Republic since 1999, Carroll was recognized for her “exemplary multi-platform journalism” with her leadership of network-wide project “The Wall: Unknown Stories, Unintended Consequences" as well as her high level of community involvement. The National Press Foundation will honor her at its annual awards dinner on February 15 of the coming year.
In addition to Carroll’s recognition, the network won three national EPPY Awards. Presented by Editor & Publisher, the EPPYs honor “the best media-affiliated websites across 30 diverse categories.” Network publications took home the top prize in the following categories:
- Best Digital Magazine with 1 million unique monthly visitors and over (The Rivers of Tennessee – The Tennessean). Touching upon the “emotional arteries” of the state, The Tennessean special report covers the stories of Tennessee’s waterways—connecting communities and shaping Tennesseans as a whole.
- Best Investigative/Enterprise Video with under 1 million unique monthly visitors: MLK’s Last Words – The Commercial Appeal. Who are the people in the iconic photo shot moments after Dr. Martin Luther King was killed by an assassin's bullet? This video explores the unknown people in Joseph Louw's photo on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.
- Best Podcast with 1 million unique monthly visitors and over: Murder on the Space Coast Season 2 – Florida Today.From 1980 to 1983, if a heinous crime was committed and the Brevard County prosecutors office had limited evidence to build a case on, they went to what can be likened to a playbook on how to seal a conviction.
