Congress has the end of the day Friday to keep the U.S. government open and prevent a partial closure of federal services just days before Christmas.

Republicans are near their takeover of the White House and both chambers of Congress for 2025. However, there's a tug-of-war issue for the party when it comes to working together.

On Thursday evening, the House rejected a deal supported by President-elect Donald Trump, with a vote of 174-235. This attempt to temporarily avoid a government shutdown was a modified version of a bipartisan bill that had already failed earlier in the week after both Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance opposed it.

Texas Rep. Chip Roy — one of the Republicans who voted against the deal — expressed his thoughts on why he disagreed with the deal on the table.

Here is what Roy had to say and a list of the 38 Republicans who voted against President-elect Donald Trump's wishes.

What did Texas Rep. Chip Roy say?

Rep. Chip Roy expressed why he voted against a deal backed by President-elect Donald Trump that would've temporarily avoided a government shutdown.

On Thursday, Trump urged Texas Republicans to consider a primary challenge against Rep. Chip Roy. He accused Roy of obstructing efforts to raise the debt ceiling during government funding discussions. On his social media platform, Trump disparaged Roy for his decision.

"The very unpopular ‘Congressman’ from Texas, Chip Roy, is getting in the way, as usual, of having yet another Great Republican Victory — All for the sake of some cheap publicity for himself. Republican obstructionists have to be done away with,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Roy responded to the president-elect on X.

“My position is simple – I am not going to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (racking up more debt) without significant & real spending cuts attached to it. I’ve been negotiating to that end. No apologies," he said.
