Parts of the United States are seeing snow for the first time this winter.

Snowfall accumulated in cities across the Great Lakes region, including Indianapolis, Chicago and Milwaukee, while the Thursday Night Football game between the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers quickly turned into a snow globe as a lake-effect snow warning was issued in northeast Ohio.

Moderate to heavy snow is forecast for portions of the central Appalachians Friday, according to the National Weather Service, where between 6-12 inches are expected with locally higher amounts possible. Some rain and snow showers are also expected across much of the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic regions as well, according to the weather service.

The NWS also said Friday morning that "heavy mountain snow" is expected over the Washington Cascades and northern Rockies through Saturday, and multiple feet of snow are likely to accumulate over portions of the northern Sierra by Saturday evening.

Snow accumulations between 1 to 2 feet are forecast for areas above 7,000 feet of elevation, with up to 3 feet possible at the highest peaks. Areas below 7,000 feet could see between 2 to 6 inches of snow, according to the weather service.
