Lake effect snow forecast: Multiple feet expected in parts of Great Lakes region this weekend

Forecasters say heavy lake effect snow will impact travel throughout the weekend east and southeast of the Great Lakes.

A multi-day lake effect snow event off Lake Erie is ongoing, making travel "very difficult" throughout the Great Lakes region as a total of 3-12 inches of new snow was produced near Cleveland, Ohio by Friday morning with 1-3 inches falling per hour, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

According to the NWS, heavy lake-effect snow will move downwind from the Great Lakes through Sunday. Also, light snow will go over parts of the central Appalachians on Friday, and light to moderate snow is expected from the middle Mississippi Valley to the central Appalachians on Saturday, meteorologists said.

Heavy lake-effect snow will also fall over the upper peninsula of Michigan through Sunday due to the upper-level troughing and cold air streaming over the Great Lakes into the Northeast, according to meteorologists. Lighter snowfall will develop over most of the west coast of the lower peninsula of Michigan around the same time, the NWS said.

As Americans travel after Thanksgiving, here is a look at the snowfall forecasts for key areas around the Great Lakes.
