Most lake effect snow in the Northeast is expected to taper off Friday morning except for areas downwind of Lake Ontario, where an additional 6-12 inches can be expected through the day Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS office in Buffalo said Friday morning that lake effect snow was continuing, especially east of Lake Ontario.

"Band off of Lake Ontario will remain strong today with 2-3 in/hr snowfall rates within the band," the NWS in Buffalo said on social media Friday morning. "This band will shift south today into Oswego County before weakening tonight."

Meanwhile, the band off Lake Erie has "weakened considerably," with now less than one inch per hour snowfall rates, according to the weather service. This band is forecast to continue weakening Friday and will be diminished by the evening.

As of Thursday, more than two feet of snow was already on the ground in parts of New York, according to the Democrat and Chronicle, a Paste BN network site based in Rochester. Erie County saw snowfall at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour Thursday, according to the NWS in Buffalo.

Orchard Park saw snowfall totals around 30 inches, while Hamburg saw nearly 29 inches, and Eden saw 28 inches.

According to the City of Buffalo Common Council, Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon declared a state of emergency for the city Thursday night due to heavy snowfall, high winds and poor visibility in the southern portion of the city.
