Striking ferry workers block trains between France and Britain

LONDON — Striking ferry workers in France blocked trains between France and England on Tuesday for the second time in a week.

Workers at MyFerryLink blocked the Channel Tunnel, which links the port of Calais in northwestern France and Folkestone in southern England, in industrial action over expected job losses after operator Eurotunnel sold the company to Denmark-based DFDS Seaways. MyFerryLink said it will cease services Thursday.

Eurostar, which operates trains between France and England, tweeted that access to the tunnel was suspended due to fire on the tracks at Calais caused by demonstrators.

On Tuesday, MyFerryLink said access to Calais was impossible, and advised travelers to seek alternative routes to Britain.

British based P&O Ferries, which operates services between the ports of Dover in southern England and Calais, said thousands of holidaymakers and truck drivers were stranded.

About 10 million people travel across the English Channel on Eurostar trains every year.
