Reports: Top Islamic State leader killed in June airstrike
A top Islamic State leader was killed last month in airstrikes in Syria, according to media reports on Thursday.
Tariq al-Harzi was killed June 16, Reuters reported. Al-Harzi worked to raise money and recruit foreign fighters for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
He was also believed to be charged with ISIL's operations outside of Iraq and Syria, according to CNN.
Al-Harzi was among four members of ISIL that was targeted for sanctions by the Obama administration. He was designated as a global terrorist, which allows the Treasury Department to block his assets and bank transfers.
"His death will impact ISIL's ability to integrate foreign terrorist fighters into the Syrian and Iraqi fight as well as to move people and equipment across the border," Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said in a statement, according to the Washington Post.
According to CNN, the State Department had offered $3 million for information on al-Harzi.
