U.S. Embassy in Turkey issues security alert

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey said Monday it would limit consular services until Wednesday because of a possible security threat.

The embassy in Ankara urged U.S. citizens to avoid the area and for Americans in the country to maintain a "high level of vigilance."

A brief security message posted on the embassy's website did not elaborate on the nature of the potential threat.

It also did not address unconfirmed Turkish media reports that surfaced last week stating that Islamic State militants were planning a suicide attack on the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul.

A suicide bomber attacked the U.S. Embassy in the Turkish capital in 2013, killing a security guard and injuring three others.

A total of 130 people were killed in twin suicide bombings in Turkey in October. The Islamic State claimed responsibility.
