Victoria Beckham embroiled in spat with Leave.EU

LONDON — Victoria Beckham, the fashion designer and wife of soccer star David, became embroiled in a spat Tuesday with a group campaigning to leave the European Union after she said they “misused” comments she made 20 years ago.

Leave.EU tweeted a picture of Victoria Beckham accompanied by the quote: “The Euro bureaucrats are destroying every bit of national identity and individuality. We must keep our national individuality,” which it attributed to her.

The tweet was accompanied by the caption” Should’ve listened to the missus, David. #LeaveEU.” Earlier Tuesday, Beckham's husband David endorsed remaining in the 28-member bloc.

The nation will vote on whether to leave or remain in the alliance on Thursday.

Victoria Beckham said in a post on Instagram that the comments Leave.EU tweeted were made two decades ago, and were not about the referendum.

"In response to the @leave.eu campaign who have today tried to put a spin on quotes made 20 years ago about keeping or losing the pound, I have to say strongly my comments were not about this referendum and should not be misused in this way!" she wrote.

"I believe in my country, I believe in a future for my children where we are stronger together and I support the #remain campaign."

In a post on his Facebook page Tuesday, David Beckham, a father of four, said Manchester United, his former soccer team, was “better and more successful” because of Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, Irish national Roy Keane and Eric Cantona, a Frenchman.

“I was also privileged to play and live in Madrid, Milan and Paris with teammates from all around Europe and the world,” he said. “Those great European cities and their passionate fans welcomed me and my family and gave us the opportunity to enjoy their unique and inspiring cultures and people.”

“We live in a vibrant and connected world where together as a people we are strong,” he added. “For our children and their children we should be facing the problems of the world together and not alone. For these reasons I am voting to Remain.”
