Man arrested after climbing Buckingham Palace fence
LONDON — A man was arrested Tuesday after he climbed over a security fence at Buckingham Palace in Britain's capital, police said.
The man, who had been drinking, did not gain access to the palace building and the incident is not thought to be terror-related, Scotland Yard said.
The unarmed 22-year-old, from south London, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing. Queen Elizabeth II is in Scotland so was not at the palace at the time.
A number of individuals have breached security at Buckingham Palace over the years.
In May, it was revealed that a man who scaled a wall at the palace is a convicted murderer.
The queen is believed to have been home when Dennis Hennessy, 41, who was on parole for murdering a homeless man in 1992, walked around the palace gardens for about 10 minutes and asked “is Ma’am in?” while he was being arrested, according to media reports at the time.
Hennessy pleaded guilty to one count of trespassing and one count of criminal damage at a court in central London and was jailed for four months.
