Why Rodrigo Duterte threatens to withdraw Philippines from UN
When two United Nations human rights experts criticized the extra-judicial killings committed under the Philippines' anti-drug campaign, its president responded with a threat.
"Maybe we'll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations," Rodrigo Duterte said over a two-hour-long speech on Sunday. (H/T GMA News, who recorded all two hours of it on Facebook Live.)
Duterte, known for his brash statements, didn't hold back when responding to the experts' call for an end to the campaign that has left hundreds of suspects dead.
Duterte went on to call the United Nations "inutile." He criticized the U.N. response to the Syrian conflict, citing the iconic image of a bloodied child in Aleppo as a prime example. He also blasted the killings of black men at the hands of police officers in the United States.
"I want the law expert to come here and count the numbers of death," he added.
Duterte also pressed allegations against a Philippine senator and critic, accusing her of having an affair with her driver whom he linked to illegal drugs, according to the Associated Press and GMA News.
