An explosive device was thrown onto the U.S. Embassy compound in the Ukrainian capital early Thursday in what police are treating as an incident of terrorism, authorities said.

The embassy, however, said it did not see the incident as an act of terrorism. Nobody was injured.

The small unidentified device detonated on the embassy’s lawn on the western outskirts of Kiev just after midnight, police said. The compound is surrounded by a high fence, making it difficult for objects to be thrown over it.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the U.S. Embassy said: “At this time, we do not consider this incident a terrorist act. The Embassy is working closely with our local partners, and the investigation is ongoing."  It said all operations were continuing as normal.
