Live stream: Toronto police give update following Monday's deadly van attack

TORONTO - Ten people were killed and 15 injured on Monday when a driver plowed a rented van into a crowd of people on a sidewalk.  Eyewitness accounts and surveillance video appear to show it was a deliberate attack.

Alek Minassian, 25,  was charged Tuesday with 10 counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.

Investigators said he was not previously known to authorities and a motive is still unclear.

Minassian repeatedly mounted the sidewalk and slammed into pedestrians along a stretch of Toronto's busy Yonge Street. He was arrested near the scene after a tense confrontation with police officers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters the incident should not change how Canadians live.

“We cannot live in fear as we go about our everyday lives,” Trudeau said.

The Monday incident was the worst mass killing in Canada in three decades.

Toronto police are holding a briefing about their investigation at 3:00 pm ET on Tuesday afternoon.
