Ski-helicopter crash leaves 3 dead, 4 in critical condition in Canada, reports say


Three people are dead and four others are in critical condition after a ski-helicopter crash in Canada on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred near Terrace, British Columbia, according to a news release from Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, the company operating the helicopter.

Northern Escape confirmed in the news release there were three fatalities. The company also said they would provide additional information when it is known.

"Northern Escape Heli-Skiing wants to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individuals who passed away, as well as those who were injured in the helicopter accident near Terrace, B.C. today," the company said in news release.

"The guests who ski with us and the staff who work with us each season are part of our family," said John Forrest, president and general manager of Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, in the statement. "It is impossible to put into words the profound grief that we feel and the sorrow that our guests and our staff share. We hope you will respect the privacy of those impacted at this extremely difficult time."

Northern Escape says it has contacted HeliCat Canada's Critical Incident Stress Management team, which will be deployed to support those involved in the incident. The CISM team will offer debriefing and defusing services, follow-up peer support and other resources, according to the news release.

"Northern Escape Heli-Skiing is focused on the safety of guests, staff and guides—it is our top priority and the most important work we do,” Forrest said in the statement. “We are working closely with the RCMP and other authorities to support the investigation into the cause of the incident.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports that B.C. Emergency Health Services said it was notified of the crash around 4:15 p.m., and paramedics were sent to the scene with three air ambulances and five ground ambulances.

The four critically injured people were taken to Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace, according to the CBC.

According to the Vancouver Sun, initial reports indicate there were eight people on board – six guests, a pilot and a guide.
