Officials are assessing damage after Cyclone Chido devastated the island of Mayotte over the weekend.

The worst storm to hit the Indian Ocean islands in approximately 100 years, Chido's 124 mph winds ripped apart infrastructure and disrupted power and drinking sources, Reuters reported. Mayotte is a French territory off the east coast of Africa with approximately 320,000 people.

France's top official on Mayotte, François-Xavier Bieuville, speaking with a local media outlet, estimated there could be hundreds or even thousands of fatalities, according to multiple reports.

Shacks and buildings were left completely destroyed when the cyclone struck the nation hampered by poverty. Here's a look at the damage left by Cyclone Chido.

Chido formed in the Indian Ocean Friday afternoon and headed west, hitting Mozambique Sunday. The storm has weakened as it moves over land, according to the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command.

"UNICEF is concerned about the immediate impacts of this cyclone, the loss of life, the damage to schools, to people's homes, to health care facilities," a video from UNICEF Mozambique posted on X said.

Communications are down in much of Mayotte and relief operations are underway, according to Reuters.
