US tariffs on Canadian imports paused for 30 days, Trudeau says

- The United States has agreed to pause tariffs on Canadian imports for 30 days.
- The pause comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with President Donald Trump about border security.
- Canada has agreed to implement a $1.3 billion border plan that includes new helicopters, technology and personnel.
The United States 25% tariff on Canadian imports will be paused for 30 days, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday.
In a post on X just after 4:30 p.m., Trudeau wrote: "Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together."
Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump's 25% tariff on Mexican goods was also paused as the two nations talk.
Trudeau also wrote: "I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border."

"In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million," Trudeau said.
Trump posted on Truth Social just before 5 p.m.: "Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country."
The president also wrote he was pausing tariffs on Canada for 30 says "to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured."
In addition, Trump said he implementing "a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl, and we will be backing it with $200 million.”
On Saturday, Trump signed executive orders, imposing 25% tariffs on Mexican and most Canadian imports and 10% on goods from China, that were set to beging on Tuesday.
