White smoke has signaled that a new pope has been selected to replace Pope Francis.
The smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in Rome on the second day of balloting, indicating the 133 cardinals locked inside had reached a two-thirds majority required to pick a new pontiff.
The new pope was expected to soon make an appearance on a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square.
