Coronavirus Watch: Largest single-day increase in new coronavirus cases

The World Health Organization reported the largest single-day increase in new COVID-19 cases Sunday: over 183,000. Brazil and the U.S. showed the biggest jumps – at 54,771 and 36,617 cases, respectively. More than two-thirds of new deaths were also reported in the Americas.

In the United States, the virus appears to be spreading across the West and South. Arizona reported over 3,100 new infections, just short of Friday’s record of 3,246 new cases, and 26 deaths. Nevada also reported a new high of 445 cases. But neither protests in the wake of George Floyd's death nor more people leaving home explain the surge of new COVID-19 cases, a Paste BN analysis of counties with at least 100 cases has found

• Governors are rolling out a patchwork of constantly evolving plans to relax social distancing restrictions. The orders vary by state, county and even city. Check out this map of COVID-19 case trends, reopening status and mobility to see what's happening in your area. 
• Set shower times. Single rooms in dorms and hotels. Online classes. Most college administrators are mulling over how to restart their programs, with no end in sight for the public health crisis. Here's what college will look like in fall 2020.
• More Americans are eligible to withdraw money from their retirement plans if they have been affected by COVID-19, according to the IRS. The Internal Revenue Service announced Friday that it has expanded eligibility to "take into account additional factors such as reductions in pay, recessions of job offers, and delayed start dates." 
• Carnival Cruise Line will extend its sailing suspension in North America through the end of September, the cruise line announced Monday. Industry group Cruise Lines International Association announced recently that member cruise lines have voluntarily extended the suspension of U.S. cruise operations until Sept. 15 amid coronavirus concerns.

📈 Today's numbers: Almost 2.3 million Americans and 8.9 million people worldwide have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the Johns Hopkins University dashboard. The U.S. death toll has surpassed 119,900; more than 468,400 people have died globally.
