It's Your Week: When national tragedies happen, we come together.

When I was about to head back to Ohio State after Thanksgiving break my senior year, I got an emergency alert about an active shooter on campus.

I was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper and immediately got a call from the campus editor: He was headed to the scene.

One day at the Enquirer in Cincinnati, a reporter yelled there was an active shooter at Fountain Square. By the time I looked up, she was already out the door.

I'm Sallee Ann and this is Your Week, our newsletter exclusively for Paste BN subscribers. This week, as we come to grips with yet another shooting, I want to turn the floor over to our network of local journalists. These are the people who run toward tragedy in their own communities for the benefit of their community.

'Immediate, unflinching coverage' in Texas

From Manny García, Executive Editor of the Austin American-Statesman, with deep thanks:

"In times of crisis, readers turn to trusted sources for accurate, contextual, independent journalism that provides hope but also hold those in power accountable. This week is another example of the strength and commitment of Paste BN and its extraordinary network of newsrooms across our country.

"As soon as we heard about the tragic massacre in Uvalde, reporters and visual journalists across Texas dropped everything and drove to this small Texas town and began reporting, and by nightfall, reporters from other newsrooms and Paste BN converged on Uvalde to provide immediate, unflinching coverage.

"Our work will continue in the days, weeks and months to come. An investigative team consisting of Paste BN and Austin American-Statesman journalists has already produced exclusive stories with more projects underway to determine how the killing of 19 children and their two teachers could have been prevented.

"Please consider coming alongside us and support our journalism. A share of your subscriptions helps support our public service mission to serve our communities and our country."

More on Uvalde:

Don't forget, you can text me

I am hosting a texting experience just for Paste BN subscribers (that's you!). This past week, we discussed the investigation into China's secret Uyghur detention system, the latest in our Title IX series and had a Q&A with reporters on the ground in Uvalde.
