House vote on same-sex marriage puts lawmakers on the record

House Democrats and Republicans will vote Tuesday on protections for same-sex and interracial marriage in a political roll-call that indicates where each lawmaker stands on these issues ahead of November's elections. The vote is a direct reaction to the Supreme Court's conservative majority, which has expressed intentions to revisit widely-held laws protecting many Americans' rights, most recently overturning Roe v. Wade and the right to abortion. Here's more on Justice Clarence Thomas' call to "reconsider" other rights established by the high court.

The House vote foreshadows how issues like abortion and same-sex marriage will top ballots this November.

  • A similar effect in the SenateSen. Ted Cruz said the Supreme Court was off base in 2015 for its ruling that legalized same-sex marriage and believes it should be reconsidered.
  • Background: Here's a quick history of the battle for same-sex marriage in the U.S
  • ''Be really afraid right now''LGBTQ people fear hard-fought gains are greatly at risk.
  • The power is with midterm voters: The legislative path to codify rights like abortion is doomed, and anything Biden does will only last as long as he's in the White House.

At least 748 heat-related deaths have been reported in Spain and neighboring Portugal, where temperatures reached 117 degrees this month. In Britain and most of Europe, few homes, apartments, schools or small businesses have air conditioning, making residents vulnerable.
