The Daily Money: Southwest executive apologizes for holiday meltdown


It’s Paul Davidson here bringing you Thursday’s top news.

A Southwest Airlines executive told Congress this morning he was “deeply sorry” for nearly 17,000 flight cancelations that left many passengers stranded and disrupted holiday air travel in late December.

Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson told the Senate Commerce committee that weather-related disruptions “overwhelmed our crew scheduling processes and technology.”

A pilots union official said pilots have been warning about the airlines’ inadequate crew scheduling technology for years.

Bed Bath & Beyond to close more stores

Bed Bath & Beyond said this week it plans to close another 150 stores and raise more than $1 billion in a stock offering as part of an effort to avoid bankruptcy.

The chain said the money from the share sale will be used to repay outstanding debt. Last month, the company said it defaulted on its credit line with JPMorgan.

The company’s shared close down 13% Wednesday at $2.61.

How about a cauliflower sandwich?

Chick-fil-A says it will debut a new cauliflower sandwich Monday in Denver, Colorado; Charleston, South Carolina; and Greensboro, North Carolina.

The chain's first plant-based entree only looks like a chicken sandwich. The cauliflower is fileted and marinated in a mild buffalo-style sauce, hand breaded and pressure cooked to a crispy finish.
