The Daily Money: Older workers fill positions once held by young adults and teens
Hi, it's Amritpal Kaur Sandhu-Longoria with The Daily Money headlines. It's Thursday, which is what I call a pre-Friday. Let us rejoice.
Jobs that were once filled by teens and young adults, like cashiers and retail associates, are now being filled by older workers. While the money helps, some workers in their 30s and 40s turn to these positions for the flexible part-time hours, and to reengage with people now that pandemic restrictions have eased.
In retail, Baby Boomers ages 59 to 77 made up 23% of all shift hours last year, up from 20% in 2020, and Generation X workers ages 43 to 58 made 21% of working hours, up from 20%. It's a trend that is easing worker shortages, which have hit shops and restaurants hard.
Home prices increased in February
After nearly seven consecutive months of falling prices, home prices rose by 0.16% in February in 39 of the 50 largest U.S. housing markets. The increase was fueled by a combination of lower inventory, high demand and declining mortgage rates.
