COVID milestone: Dubai airport, foreign travel hub, sees traffic top pre-pandemic level

Happy Thursday, Daily Money readers! It’s Paul Davidson bringing you the day’s news.

Need another telltale sign the pandemic is over?

Here’s one: Traffic at the world’s busiest international airport has topped pre-COVID levels.

Dubai International Airport served 41.6 million passengers the first half of this year – surpassing figures from the first six months of 2019 and about 50% above the same period last year.

The Dubai airport has long been a reliable barometer for global aviation, though total airport traffic worldwide is still just short of pre-COVID levels, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Passenger traffic at Dubai this year has been driven by trips to India, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Pakistan and Russia.

Economic toll of Maui fires: At least $4B

The Maui wildfires have caused at least $4 billion in losses, according to a report by Moody’s Analytics.

The wildfires destroyed more than 2,000 structures and resulted in $4 billion to $6 billion in property damage and business interruption. The town of Lahaina was hit hardest. At least three-quarters of the damage is believed to be covered by insurance.

That total doesn’t include another $1 billion in lost economic output.

At least 115 people died in the Aug. 8 disaster and about 1,000 are still missing, according to Hawaii officials.
