The Daily Money: Disney blackout, the bad news about child care

Disney-owned channels, including ABC and ESPN, have gone dark on Charter Spectrum.

Channels owned by Disney Entertainment including ABC and ESPN went dark Thursday night for Charter Spectrum subscribers. The two companies could not agree on terms for Charter Spectrum to carry Disney programming.

Fans discovered the blackout when they tuned in to watch the college football game between Florida and No. 14 Utah on ESPN.

Charter says it has approximately 14.7 million "video subscribers" via Spectrum.

The blackout applies to 19 different Disney-owned cable channels, Spectrum says, but college football fans took note with the blackout going into effect right around the 8 p.m. ET kickoff of Thursday night's biggest game.

More child daycares to close, raise prices

Child care has long been unaffordable and inaccessible for many Americans, costing parents over $10,000 per year on average while more than half of the population lives in "child care deserts" with insufficient supply.

Industry advocates warn that the situation could grow even worse in the months to come.

States are expected to face a steep decline in federal child care investment starting Sept. 30, the expiration date for pandemic-era funding that has helped stabilize the sector over the past two years. The funding cutoff could result in the loss of 70,000 programs and more than 3 million child care spots, according to The Century Foundation, a progressive public policy think tank.
