Talking Tech: Netflix raises prices, how to cut down on email spam

Netflix has raised its prices, Apple has a new pencil and how to (safely) unsubscribe from emails and cut the clutter. Here's the week's latest tech news:

Are you still watching? Netflix has hiked the monthly price of its basic plan to $12 from $10, and its premium plan to $23 from $20. Netflix's $7 ad-supported plan will still cost $7 a month.

The last time Netflix raised prices in the U.S. was in January 2022. The price hikes take effect immediately.

Pencils down. Apple has announced a new, more affordable Apple Pencil that comes with a hidden USB-C charging port. According to Apple, the new pencil is designed with a matte finish and a flat side that magnetically attaches to the side of an iPad for storage.

It will be available beginning in early November. See more details on the new Apple Pencil.

In your inbox. Here’s how to stop getting emails you don’t want – without opening yourself up to more junk. With reputable companies, clicking unsubscribe should do the trick. If you’re receiving newsletters or promotional emails from brands you know, they generally follow email marketing regulations.

For unsolicited spam from unknown senders? Clicking unsubscribe may indeed make things worse. You inadvertently confirm that your email address is active … possibly leading to even more spam.
