An ammunition plant in southeast Iowa that first churned out bombs and other munitions for World War II is getting an approximately $1.5 billion upgrade.

As President Joe Biden pushes Congress for tens of billions of dollars in additional military support for Ukraine and also for Israel, he’s emphasized that the missiles and artillery shells being sent overseas are made in America, providing a local economic boost to communities such as Middletown, Iowa.

"When we use the money allocated by Congress, we use it to replenish our own stores − our own stockpiles with new equipment − equipment that defends America and is made in America,” Biden said in a prime-time address this month.

But Biden's argument that increased military spending abroad boosts small town American economies may not be winning among Republican lawmakers opposed to spending more money on Ukraine.
