The death of a 19-year-old taken hostage
Adi Marciano was woken up at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 7 by a phone call from her daughter, Noa, who told her she was hiding in a bomb shelter.
There was shooting outside, Noa told her, and she and her friends had 10 seconds to throw on their pajamas before fleeing. The oldest of four children, 19-year-old Noa served in an Israeli intelligence unit and was stationed at a lookout post on Kibbutz Nahal Oz when Hamas attacked.
"They didn't know where to go, what to do," Adi said. "After that, she hung up the phone."
Marciano called back an hour later, and Noa told her she had to hang up because she needed to be quiet. That was the last time Marciano heard from her daughter. In a brief statement Tuesday, the Israeli military confirmed Noa had been killed, but did not indicate how she had died.
Her loss comes just after her mother traveled to Florida last week to raise awareness for the 240 hostages currently held in Gaza. While President Joe Biden has expressed optimism at the return of hostages, Marciano's family is dealing with the reality of loss.
