A note for gratitude, a note for hope
Latest updates: A temporary truce between Israel and Hamas that was delayed after its announcement earlier this week will begin on Friday, Qatar announced.
Cheryl Hall put out a pad of paper, a pen and two boxes — one so people could write down what they’re grateful for and the other so they could write down their hopes.
After a month of protests linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict, Hall wanted people in her Teaneck, New Jersey, community to take a step back at a "Friendsgiving" potluck dinner hosted by the Teaneck Interfaith Community. The gathering included both halal and kosher foods, and Hall's gratitude notes.
Jennifer Montag, a member of the Orthodox Jewish community who has family in Israel, attended the potluck.
"Nothing has felt normal for me and my family since Oct. 7," she said. "I imagine that won't be any different for Thanksgiving, either."
Across North Jersey, many people share Montag's position grieving over loss of life in the Israel-Hamas war and struggling with how to handle a holiday that involves feasting, bounty and cheer. Some are canceling celebrations or are using the holiday to raise money for charity. Diverse towns like Teaneck are hoping to promote unity over division.
