A New Jersey family celebrates Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, the celebration to mark the last day of Ramadan, is expected Wednesday. But for many Palestinian Muslim families, Ramadan has felt more emotional and turbulent this year, as their thoughts are consumed by the war in Gaza.

In Clifton, New Jersey, Rania Mustafa maintained some festive traditions for her children, ages 3 and 5. The family strung lights and decorations inside their home, although it was a smaller display than last year. They did not hang outdoor lights or signs.

Despite their young age, Mustafa’s children know that times are different, that people are in mourning and that their mom is trying to help. Mustafa directs the Palestinian American Community Center in Clifton, which has been a clearinghouse for members of the community as they navigate death, activism and charity.

Eid is a festive time for Muslims. Traditionally, families host large gatherings, serve lavish meals, buy new clothes and give gifts to children during Eid al-Fitr. This year, Mustafa bought presents and clothes for the kids, but not for herself or her husband. They will still gather with relatives, Mustafa said, noting the importance of being close to loved ones in times of tragedy.
