Do you remember "Barbenheimer," the epic July 2023 weekend that marked the release of two hit films, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer?" The costumes, the packed theaters and the double-feature endurance still stick with me nearly a year later.
Will summer films ever rival that moment?
👋 Nicole Fallert here and welcome to Your Week, our newsletter exclusively for Paste BN subscribers (that's you!). This week, we talk with Paste BN film correspondent Brian Truitt about the films he expects will make waves amid the summer heat waves.
But first, don't miss these stories made possible by your Paste BN subscription:
- Swing state voters were exhausted and disgusted by the Biden-Trump debate.
- A 988 crisis lifeline for LGBTQ youths launched a year ago. It's been swamped.
- How does foreign talent factor into the NBA draft?
- American tourists are being profiled. Don't be one of them.
- Review: "The Bear" Season 3 is chewy, delicious and overindulgent.
Here's what we're watching
The summer of 1984 was a big moment for movies: "Karate Kid," "Ghostbusters" and "Gremlins" all hit the big screen, inspiring and entertaining audiences across America. That summer instilled cult classics and shaped a generation of movie lovers, including Paste BN movie correspondent Brian Truitt.
"I was raised on those movies," Truitt said. "Those movies made me who I am and what I do for a living now."
His summer plans include revisiting these films for the "umpteenth time" with his own child, sharing his love for stories on the screen: "It's important to share those memories and go back in time and rethink about where I, and the world, was."
Film has that transformative quality that never gets old. No matter where you are during the day, stepping into another world through film is a unique and timeless value cinema delivers. Paste BN understands this special effect and just launched a new weekly newsletter "Watch Party" to highlight what you should be watching. Our in-house expert Truitt is the newsletter's author, writing about his favorite movies of the moment and guiding audiences to the best content for their budgets.
"Paste BN knows a lot about entertainment of different kinds," Truitt said. "Everyone doesn't have a lot of free time. we know people's time and money is limited, so we're trying to get out the best stuff in the newsletter. If you have a limited amount of time focus, these are on the things to watch."
From teasing exclusive Paste BN interviews with stars to dipping into the best television streaming (ahem, "The Bear" Season 3?!), our new "Watch Party" newsletter will give a peek inside in the onscreen world (without giving any spoilers, obviously!).
"'Watch Party' comes in we talk about the hits and why you want to see them," Truitt said. "Our aim is to show you how to spend your time and money."
"Watch Party" will discuss plenty of streaming hits coming to your couch, including Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron's steamy romance "A Family Affair" on Netflix and Eddie Murphy's fourth turn as "Beverly Hills Cop," also on Netflix.

Another "Barbenheimer" likely won't happen this summer, Truitt said. But "Inside Out 2" has already delivered a mega-hit in cinemas for the summer, "checking all the boxes for a summer movie hit," Truitt said, from star power to an endearing story to, yes − that transformative effect.
Brian Truitt's summer film picks
- "Twisters" revisits the '90s cult classic "Twister."
- "Deadpool & Wolverine" will feed what Truitt calls the "starved" Marvel universe.
- Kevin Costner delivers on the current cowboy trend with "Horizon."
- "Kinds of Kindness" is the perfect "weird" film for anyone seeking the avant-garde, Truitt says.
