The Daily Money: Are egg prices up or down?

Good morning and Happy Friday! This is Betty Lin-Fisher with Friday's consumer-focused edition of The Daily Money.

The average U.S. city price of a dozen large grade A at retail stores in March was $6.23, according to the latest consumer price index released April 10. The CPI is released monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics and is a measure of prices paid for consumer goods and services.

But the latest wholesale egg market report on April 4 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture listed the average wholesale price of loose, white large shell eggs at almost half that or $3.26 per dozen. Another weekly report is scheduled to be released April 11.

And data gathered by Paste BN on April 10 at several retail stores in a St. Louis suburb ranged from $4.19 to $5.49.

So, what gives? Have egg prices risen or fallen? Will they be expensive for the upcoming Easter holiday?

I explain the reasons for the volatility and the vast differences in egg prices.
