Maryland senator heads to El Salvador seeking Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return
One Democrat is taking the fight to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia directly to El Salvador. Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen landed in the Central American country on Wednesday to speak with government officials about returning Abrego Garcia to the United States. Abrego Garcia, a union sheet metal worker and father of three, was wrongly deported to El Salvador and sent to the country's most notorious prison on March 15. Follow today’s updates.
- Van Hollen said he hopes to meet with “some high level government officials from El Salvador” to discuss Abrego Garcia’s release. “I told his wife and his family I would do everything possible to bring him home, and we're going to keep working at this until we're successful,” he said in a video posted to X shortly after arriving in El Salvador.
- Two House Democrats, Reps. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., and Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., are requesting an official Congressional delegation visit to the prison in El Salvador where Abrego Garcia is being held. The lawmakers said they want "to conduct a welfare check" on Abrego Garcia.
- A U.S. federal judge on Wednesday found "probable cause" to hold the Trump administration in contempt of court for violating his order last month halting deportations of Venezuelan migrants under an 18th century wartime law.

Trump admin sues Maine over transgender athletes
President Donald Trump’s conflict with Maine just escalated. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced legal action against Maine for refusing to ban transgender athletes from participating in women's and girls' sports. Bondi said the federal suit underscores the importance of Title IX, the federal law prohibiting discrimination based on sex in educational institutions. The lawsuit comes five days after the administration tried to cut off all of Maine's federal funding for public schools and its school lunch program over the issue. Trump on Feb. 21 clashed with Maine's Democratic governor, Janet Mills, during a meeting with a group of U.S. governors. What the lawsuit means.
Joe Biden returns to the national stage
Former President Joe Biden isn’t approving of his successor’s work in the Oval Office. In his first speech since leaving the White House nearly four months ago, Biden accused Trump of "taking a hatchet" to the Social Security Administration. Biden argued the Trump administration's cuts steered by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency have jeopardized the future of Social Security for millions of seniors and disabled Americans who depend on it. See what Biden said.
