Americans sour on Trump economy
Hey there! Rebecca Morin here. It's starting to officially warm up here in D.C. and I couldn't be happier!
Poll: Trump loses trust in the economy as 100-day mark nears
The 2024 presidential election was largely about the economy. It was the No. 1 issue for many Americans. And they chose Donald Trump to address their concerns. But as Trump approaches the 100-day mark of his second term, most Americans are expressing little to no confidence in how the president is handling the economy, a Pew Research Center survey shows. Among those surveyed, 40% approved overall of the job he is doing as president; 59% disapproved. See the full poll results.
- It’s been a complete flip on how Americans believed Trump would handle the economy. A survey last November found that Americans, by a margin of 59% to 40%, said they were very or somewhat confident about Trump's ability to make good decisions about economic policy. Now, in the new poll, 54% say they have little to no confidence in his handling of the economy, while 45% are confident.
- That isn’t the only poll showing Americans are dissatisfied with their finances under Trump. A recent Gallup survey also found that more than half (53%) of Americans believe that their personal financial situation is getting worse.
Tariff switch up?
With dissatisfaction brewing among Americans and in the U.S. markets, Trump is now changing his tone on his tariff tit-for-tat with China. Trump says his administration expects to reach a "fair deal" with China on trade.
- Trump on April 22 told reporters that the 145% tariffs he imposed on Chinese imports would eventually "come down substantially" as he expressed optimism about future talks to reach a U.S.-China trade deal.

Tesla slumps – and so does Elon Musk
You’ll probably be seeing less of this billionaire at the White House. Elon Musk, the Tesla-CEO-turned-top-Trump-ally heading the Department of Government Efficiency, said Tuesday that he would be spending less time with the Trump administration after Tesla’s first-quarter earnings showed that net income for the quarter was down 71%. Musk said the time he spends with DOGE will “drop significantly” starting next month. Trump previously suggested that Musk’s time at the White House was nearing an end.
