Weekend recap
Day 1
— Winners and losers of the NFL's first round. From trades to all the QBs to Baker Mayfield going No. 1. Who won and who lost?
- The first round of the NFL draft was capped by Heisman Trophy winners, as the Browns surprised the pundits by taking Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall and the division-rival Ravens traded up to select Louisville's Lamar Jackson at No. 32.
- Between them there were three other QBs taken: Sam Darnold at No. 3 overall to the Jets, Josh Allen at No. 7 to the Bills, and Josh Rosen at No. 10 to the Cardinals.
- At No. 2 the Giants made Penn State running back Saquon Barkley the highest-drafted RB since 2006 and sent a clear message in the process: they're trying to win now.
- Allen's day began with the resurfacing of old racially insensitive tweets just hours before the first round began. "Somebody knew what they were doing,” Allen said. “It's out there, it's my fault. I can't blame anyone else for my own mistakes.”
- Rosen, judged by some to be the best passer in the class, had his own message after being the fourth QB selected: “There were nine mistakes made ahead of me, and I’m going to make sure they all know it was a mistake."
- The most emotional moment of the night though came courtesy of Ryan Shazier. The Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker who suffered a serious spinal cord injury last season walked out onto the stage to present the Steelers' first-round pick.
Day 2
- The second and third rounds of the NFL draft saw some interesting picks ... and some big-time trolling of the predominantly pro-Cowboys home crowd by former Eagles kicker David Akers.
- LSU headline-making running back Derrius Guice slipped to the Redskins at No. 59 overall.
- The Steelers selected a potential successor for Ben Roethlisberger with the selection of Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph in the third round.
- Oklahoma's Orlando Brown Jr. also found out he was selected by one of the the teams his late father played for, the Baltimore Ravens.
Day 3
- Rounds 4-7 of the NFL draft were all about Shaquem Griffin. The one-handed linebacker from Central Florida made history when he was selected in the fifth round by the Seattle Seahawks — the team for which his twin brother Shaquill plays.
- The defending champion Eagles also made some waves in the seventh round by drafting an Australian rugby player with no real football experience.
- The year's Mr. Irrelevant – the final pick of the draft – also wasn't that, well, irrelevant: Trey Quinn was a little league legend it turns out, having thrown a no-hitter at the 2008 Little League World Series.
