Initial impressions of preseason debuts for rookie first-round QBs. Tim Tebow at TE and Jordan Love finally plays.
The first full weekend of NFL preseason play is in the books.
Every team entered the exhibition slate with questions to answer before the 2021 season kicks off for real in September.
Some teams - such as the New Orleans Saints - might be facing bigger questions than expected after one preseason game.
Who has the edge in NFL's QB battles so far, and who were the league's biggest winners and losers? Here are the biggest takeaways from preseason Week 1, as much-hyped rookie quarterbacks made their highly anticipated debuts:
- On his first play from scrimmage, Trevor Lawrence was dropped for a sack by the relentless pass-rush pressure of the Cleveland Browns.
- Zach Wilson, the player the New York Jets drafted at No. 2 behind Lawrence, was efficient in limited playing time.
- Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall draft pick, had an up-and-down preseason debut for the San Francisco 49ers.
- Chicago Bears rookie QB Justin Fields showed flashes of his dynamic playmaking ability after replacing starter Andy Dalton.
- Tim Tebow played some tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but didn't do much in his much-ballyhooed return to the NFL.
- More than 15 months after the Green Bay Packers traded up to draft Jordan Love, the quarterback finally had his first live snaps and showed some promise.
- Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater were sharp as the two audition for the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback role.
- Second-year quarterback Jacob Eason outshined rookie Sam Ehlinger in the competition for the backup role behind Carson Wentz on the Indianapolis Colts' depth chart.
- The Saints could be facing a potential QB crisis if Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill can't elevate their games.
- The Los Angeles Rams and Chargers finally got to play in front of fans at SoFi Stadium.
